For eight years of professional hockey, this was Darcy Simon’s job. His career spanned the AHL and the International League with three seasons right here in Fredericton. Wherever he played, he was always known as one of the league’s toughest players and was an enforcer who put his all into defending not only his team’s net, but also his team’s honour.

Coincidentally, Darcy’s success off the ice came from that same “stay at home” philosophy that fueled his success as an athlete. You see, Darcy was always – and still is – a big believer in getting involved in the communities in which he played, right here with the Fredericton Canadiens. Whether he was appearing at an elementary school to promote the “Stay in School” campaign he developed or just signing autographs after a game, Darcy never lost perspective on what matters most – giving back to the fans who made the game possible. One of his proudest moments was skating off the ice in his last game with PEI and seeing adoring fans holding signs that read “Simon for Mayor” in the crowd.

“It’s all about giving back to the people and doing good things for them,” Darcy says. “If they didn’t know any players, the fans weren’t as invested. Once they knew me, it meant more to them.”

It obviously requires a great deal of hard work and perseverance to play professionial hockey for eight seasons, two traits that Darcy possesses in spades. But what truly differentiates him is his genuine care for those around him. In hockey, that meant investing himself in the communities where he played. Although he has since retired from hockey and turned his sights to real estate, his approach remains the same. He still supports many local organizations, including the Darcy Simon Midget ‘AAA’ Canadiens hockey club.
